Last Day for Diva Watercoloring!

Hi everyone! I'm posting with the end-of-the-month team at Die Cut Divas today as inspiration for the last day of our May Watercolor Challenge. I couldn't resist doing the old watercolor print-making technique to create a background & embellishments for a Christmas card.

Using a piece of watercolor paper as a work surface, I watercolored snowflakes that I'd die cut from watercolor paper. I did four snowflakes, moving the smaller ones around to add that color more places. I moved the snowflakes to a paper towel to add more color and to spray them with shimmer spray. Once dry, I die cut the work surface panel with a stitched rectangle & added it to an A2 kraft card. Stamped a sentiment from the Woodland Critters set & glued three snowflakes around it - done! I saved the fourth snowflake for future but you can see it off to the side in the photo.

For my bonus, I wanted to do a couple more pages for my mini watercolor journal started HERE. I already had two blank pages ready to go from that previous post; just not added to the journal yet.

First I stamped the With a Friend Window image - one of AI's fabulous Windows to the World collection - onto watercolor paper. I watercolored it with leftover inks in my palette (mostly Altenew 24 pan), plus water.  Once dry, I die cut it with the back panel to the window frame die from the journal set. Then I cut the window frame from a scrap of kraft cardstock & layered it atop the watercolored panel. Added this to a journal page. I love how the window panes open to show more of the scene!

Next I stamped the mailbox from the Mini Journal stamp set & watercolored it, doodling some grass & flowers. Die cut it with the frame die that cuts an interior rectangle. Then I die cut a kraft frame to go around it. Glued this to the opposite page and added the pages to the journal. Here's a photo of how they fit:

There's room to add more artwork on the back sides of the pages I've completed, plus the insides of the covers and back. Kinda fun to work with the small scale.

A Mini Watercolor Journal

Hi all - welcome! I'm posting the project below at Die Cut Divas today as inspiration for our May Watercolor Challenge.

I love Art Impression who's our May sponsor - thanks AI! I wanted to use one of their mini journal die sets for my watercoloring. First I die cut the journal cover and pages from watercolor paper. I watercolored these with leftover green & yellow inks in my palette (mostly Hero Arts), plus water. I used a large flat brush and made a texture as I applied the ink. After the cover dried, I added the gold clasp and photo corners, cut from TH gold metallic. Here's a photo of the closed journal cover in my hand so you can see the scale:

Next I die cut two scalloped rectangles from the journal set to layer onto a couple pages. I stamped a sparrow on one and the birdhouse on the other. I watercolored these with Altenew 24 pan watercolors. The bird image was a freebie that came from AI with an order; they have wonderful freebies! I doodle painted some leaves on the branch and some grass below the birdhouse. Nothing special - I'm not good at watercoloring!! Glued them to the pages and glued the two pages together, overlapping at the center tabs. Here's a photo:

Finally, I glued this pair of pages (the journal packaging shows doing two) into the journal. I didn't do the flip sides of these pages yet; that'll be for another day. Here's a photo of the journal open with the above pages glued in. You glue another set of pages to the right side.

Since I did the journal and a couple pages, I don't have an additional bonus project today. I'll add my project to Darnell's May NBUS Challenge #74 since my journal dies are newly used.

So, I've already said that my absolute favorite die cut shapes are hearts but boxes of any kind also delight me! And I love snowflake dies too - I have too many!! I combined these loves for my project. 

Die cut the box and wrap around piece, a topper layer & a side layer which you can see below. I stamped the topper and side layers with a texty print. Next I die cut two of the snowflakes from the 3piece set & layered. Assembled the box, added the layers and the snowflake. A preprinted sentiment finished the top. Here's the box side:

I die cut the page from aqua plaid, trimming off the end since I have a smaller journal. Scored the center. On the front side I stamped some dots in aqua. On a scrap of Neenah, I stamped & colored the boots, then die cut. Die cut snowflakes & assembled the page. Added a CCC sentiment from the bits box. I'll have to work on the interior and back pages later. I'm adding the journal page to Darnell's June NBUS Challenge #63 since my Lost in the Woods kit is getting first play here.

Yet more mixed media!

Hey everyone - I'm back with another accordion art journal page & card using mixed media inspired by the Hero Arts Mixed Media Stamp Along from July. Just a reminder, you can now purchase the replay and have some mixed media fun along with me!

My page used another part of a work surface page (Bristol smooth) that I didn't photograph. I started with a 3" square gelli plate and stamped it with two mini ink cubes into a grid of 9. Misted it and applied to the paper. Some cube impressions showed up very regular looking and others bled out. I also brayered some ink on the same plate and you can see a few obvious edges of that too. I sprayed the panel with water and let dry, then sprayed through a stencil, did some texture stamping and applied some rub-ons (bird & flowers). Also used my glass bottle bottom to stamp some dots trailing behind the bird.

Hero Arts included a freebie stamp set with a purchase during the Stamp Along. I used it to stamp the "dare to" part of the sentiment. The stamp set includes the word dream but, in keeping with many of the other journal pages, I die cut the word from the lower case luggage alphabet set. Love how this turned out!

Next, I made a card using the final piece of the watercolor paper work surface I used during the Stamp Along. I had some extra Happy Birthday diecuts from when I made a previous card using another part of the watercolor work surface panel. The design for today's card is similar but the background was finished differently & I added a white shadow layer (fussy cut) to the sentiment. It's another guy card so I didn't embellish much. I'm curious, if you care to comment, whether you like the design better with or without the shadow layer. I tried vellum too but didn't like it. This particular section of the work surface had a lot of dark areas so I wanted the sentiment to stand out more.

Another Mixed Media Art Journal Page & Card

Today's panel uses another chunk of the work surface I used during the event. I cut it from adjacent to the part used on the LOVE page I shared HERE. After I glued down the white die cut word "rise", I kicked myself - meant it to be going upwards left to right... Oh well, no peeling it up afterwards, it was well adhered!

I added some stenciling & the music texture. Kept it simple since the card went to a guy musician. Maybe should've done a black shadow on my sentiment die but I used a scrap of HA Bermuda cardstock since it went with the stenciling. Hey there - I'm back with some more projects inspired by last weekend's Hero Arts Mixed Media Stamp Along. I have a card and a journal page for you today.

The panel for this card was done with the help of a 3x3" square gel plate. I neglected to photograph the print before I cut it up but I had enough for four cards.  I made a previous card with another quarter of the print (at bottom of post HERE).

I basically brayered ink onto the gel plate and used it as a stamp without pressing down too hard on the edges; didn't want harsh square edges (but you can see a few). I brayered over a stencil on the gel plate and also sprayed through the stencil direct to paper with some glimmer mist. Once dry, I die cut with a stitched rectangle & stamped with a cling script stamp inked with Hero Wax (very subtle gold in spots) and then with a clear script stamp held on my fingertips with some teal ink. I matted the printed the print with black and added to an A2 card formed from Hero Arts Bermuda cardstock. A label made with a Dymo embossing tool became the sentiment strip.

Here's an accordion art journal page I made using part of the watercolor sheet I'd used as a work surface (see that photo HERE). I added a LOVE diecut (Hero Arts Love You Stamp & Cut XL) along with a leftover sentiment strip.The narrow strip on the left side near the page's edge was trimmed off another page that I'd cut too large. Didn't want to waste it, right?

More Journal Pages Inspired by the Hero Arts Mixed Media Stamp Along

Hey everyone - thought I'd pop back in with some more accordion art journal pages I completed after the Hero Arts Mixed Media Stamp Along last weekend. First up, one I did on Sunday.

As recommend by Kathy of The Daily Marker during one of her 30 Day Coloring Challenges, I had used pieces of watercolor paper as a work surface during the event. Forgot to photograph the one I used here but it was very messy with inks. I trimmed part of it to a journal page and continued to embellish with script stamping & stenciling. Very shimmery in real life thanks to irridescent spray. Slapped a white die cut butterfly on there with a sentiment strip left from the event, added some Hero pearls for a "flight path" - done!

I used a second slab of watercolor paper for a work surface during the event and remembered to photograph it.

You can see where I did some ink blending and spritzing of flowers for my Saturday pages. So far I haven't used this sheet for journal pages, except I did snip a green section from under the Hero Paste for some leaves you'll see later. I'm sure the rest of the panel will find its way onto a project soon!

Next, a crafty disaster on Monday - who said crafting isn't dangerous?!

Don't ask me how it happened but I was using purple liquid watercolor on some leftover flowers and dropped the bottle! Oddly it landed straight up but the dropper went flying and liquid splattered everywhere! I had my flip-flops on when it happened but took them off for the photo so you could see more splatter. That's packing paper in the upper right corner - on the floor, luckily, to catch some liquid. I was able to scoop some of the liquid onto a palette, then I had the great idea to soak some up with a slab of watercolor paper. I cleaned up the rest (my toe is still a bit purplish around the nail) then used the purple watercolor paper for this page:

I used a stencil & brayer with some of ink saved from the spill to add some subtle texture. Then I stenciled some dots with a teal ink, plus some stenciled circles with Hero Paste. And there is the sweet flower which was getting purple ink when the disaster happened. I die cut some Poppystamps leaves from that work surface piece above & used a YOU from my stash (Hero Arts Love You Stamp & Cut XL) along with a leftover sentiment strip.

Day Two of Hero Arts First Mixed Media Stamp-Along!

Hi all - thanks for stopping back! **Warning - photo heavy post ahead**

I had a crafting marathon this weekend - a Mixed Media Stamp-Along online with Hero Arts and their fabulous instructors!! We created pages for an accordion art journal - I shared my first page from the Friday night session HERE. Saturday's classes ran into the evening, then I had to watch the Twins game (beat the Athletics -yay!!) so I waited until today to blog them. Most sessions ran 90 minutes then we had a 30 minute break (1 hour for lunch most of which I used to craft). I've listed the main supplies at the end of this post.

First up on Saturday - INSPIRE page by Mindy Eggen. She used a lot of ink blending, die cutting and rub-ons with some splatter to finish it off. Here's my take on the project...I made my letters wonky so I didn't have to align them - LOL.

Next, a Life is Tough page by Nichol Spohr. Her class title was actually based on the companion card she created using others of the encouragement sentiment strips. I used different sentiments, plus created a card using the same techniques. I used seafoam white embossing powder on my flowers & leaves so they didn't stand out as nicely as Nichol's did using a brighter white ep. We randomly stamped on the flowers and leaves with a text stamp.

Next, Life is Beautiful page by Jessica Frost-Ballas. We used a ton of shimmer spray on those flowers! And since I made an extra flower, I created a card too.

Next up, Follow Your Heart page by Channin Pelletier, using lots of liquid watercolors and some white embossed dots, plus paste through a stencil.

Next - our art journal covers. For these we had a session with Mansi, a mixed media artist, who was very inspiring. Mansi went as the spirit moved her. In fact, she made a entirely different pair of covers during the session than the ones on the handout! She did not want to see us make replicas of her covers; she wanted us to play! One of her concepts is to move on from a technique after a few minutes so you don't start "thinking". We played for 90 minutes and here's my result using watercolor paper:

See the ribbon between the covers? It started white and we painted it gold with Hero Wax, then added past through a stencil for some texture. And the bottle in the upper left corner? A tonic water bottle - I used the bottom to stamp the blue dotted circles. I'd been meaning to try it on my gel plate for ages but hadn't got around to it. Finally just used it to stamp!

And here's the journal front tied with the ribbon through a gold die cut wheel. LOL - I'd meant the panel at left in the photo above to be the cover but when I glued them on, the one at right landed on the front - oops. Otherwise the ribbon wouldn't have gone round the journal!

The evening event was a recorded video from Jennifer McGuire - so inspiring! She was live in the chat but had the session recorded so she could comment and answer questions. She made some amazing cards using gel print backgrounds with mixed media. I was creating along with her using a 3x3" plate applied to a much larger sheet multiple times. When the session ended, I left my unfinished print to sit. Worked on it more this morning and turned part of it into this card:

Fun with Hero Arts' First Mixed Media Stamp-Along!!

Hi all - welcome!! If you've been around me long, you know I LOVE Hero Arts!! This weekend is their first Stamp-Along specifically for mixed media. We're doing covers & pages for an accordion art journal; one came in the supply kit if you chose to buy one (I did). Tonight the event kicked off with a welcome from Hero CEO Aaron Leventhal, then a prerecorded interview with a couple Hero employees who love mixed media & art journals. Next, we had a class by the amazing Lydia Fiedler called CREATE. Here's my version of her page (complete with my inky fingers).

As usual, Libby Hickson (Libby's Little Addiction) from Hero Arts did a homework Live on the Wednesday before the event. Well, my dad went into the hospital so I was down visiting him. He came home late Wednesday to the meal he requested I cook for him - LOL - and is doing much better. My baby sister is visiting him too so I was able to come home yesterday and to do my homework this afternoon.

For Lydia's class homework, we just stamped randomly on smooth card stock using a script and a text stamp stuck on our fingers, then we had to stencil a small pattern with Hero Paste so it would be dry for class. She used glitter paste but mine dried up since the last event so I used the pearl kind - love it! During her class we added liquid watercolors, dried it and stamped some dots in white ("taco stamping" - folding a big cling like at taco and going randomly, then sprayed through a stencil. Added some rub-ons, die cut out the word CREATE from the page, then from another cardstock to stack back for dimension. She did 3 times, I just did one from heavyweight cardstock. So fun! My right hand was worse in terms of ink on it but I needed it to take the photo!

Since I was doing the homework this afternoon anyway, I decided to make a quick mixed media card for my adopt-a-member AJ (read about that program HERE if you missed it & are interested).

I used the pink and bright pink liquid watercolors (AJ loves pink) and some salt water taffy reactive reinker on watercolor paper. Did the finger stamping with just the script stamp, added the texture paste with the dot fade stencil, then die cut into rectangle once dry. I used the stacked circles stencil too, spraying some shimmer spray through it. Hard to see the pattern in the photo but it's so pretty in real life. The butterfly was sitting in the bits box - plain watercolor paper. I added some liquid watercolor and a gem. The sentiment strips come in one big stamp and can be trimmed with a paper trimmer or die cut using a special die. The die works for multiple stamp sets at Hero Arts, plus it cuts fun strips for general use too.

I'll add the card to Darnell's July NBUS Challenge since the encouragement strips and script stamps are new. So is a bunch of stuff for the journal page but I'll just do one linky :)

I used a larger version of the cup I used in my art journal (see this post if you missed it). I colored it a bit differently and added to an A2 card along with some "steam" (die cut from very light grey dotted paper) and a stamped/fussy cut sentiment. Very fun & simple. Since I had my dot stencil out from my CAS Mix Up entry, I sponged a dot border but without gesso this time.

And now for a bonus! I added to my art journal using some fab digi fall fruit baskets that Diva Arlene (A Bit of This and That) printed for me.

I colored the baskets with Copics & fussy cut, along with a printed, fussy cut subway art sentiment. The "bloom where you are" sentiment doesn't seem to match the stamped tree and the baskets but I was hoping to include a photo of my apple trees in full bloom. Couldn't find one - darn it. Instead I stamped, die cut and colored the girl image and stamped/colored/fussy cut the young tree image from ECD. I stamped an extra board for the sign and put it facing toward the apples (it says "orchard"). The other signs say "hayride" and "maze", all handwritten. I also added "planted" to the sentiment in my own handwriting - just for fun. Oh, and on my girl image - after coloring with blue Copics, I masked off all but the jeans and stamped the denin background on them using Hero Arts cornflower ink.

The stamped tree under the sentiment comes from a 2011 Hero Arts/Studio Calico book label set that I used for the first time today! Hmmm - 11 years on Mount NBUS, not good. I even had to break the package seal to get into it! I will add my journal page to Darnell's September NBUS Challenge since not only the book label but the small tree and girl are all new.
